First Days of School

So I lied and said we'd be having our first day of school at my parent's house. I thought it was true at the time I wrote it, but it turns out we're still in our house. All is well, we just moved the movers back a week. They are coming this Sunday, ruining our plans for Labor Day weekend. But we don't really care as it will bring us one step closer to being together under the same roof every night.

But this post is about our first days of school. So far, we've got three out of 175 under our belt! Go me! Go kids! We can do this!

Because we are the midst of getting ready to move, I scrapped the full lesson plans I had made and decided to save them for when we are completely settled. I imagine that will be well into the year 2012. I think I acted in wisdom and decided to start slowly. For now, we've begun our new math curriculum (Singapore), continued with Explode the Code books and independent reading, and I'm reading Life in the Great Ice Age aloud. We also began Sequential Spelling 1. After reading the teacher's guide, I decided to do it with both Caleb and Isabelle. Day 1 was a great success. Day 2 not so much. By Day 3 I realized it was too much for Isabelle. Caleb, on the other hand, did great!

Let's just say it's a tough time to be homeschooling. While I don't really know what to expect from each of the kids in regards to the move, I want to be sensitive to how they are dealing with it all. What appears to be bad behavior could be one child's way of dealing. So I'm trying to give grace... and lots of positive feedback. I'm trying to keep our schooling to just the AM hours to give time for visits with friends since these are the last few weeks we will be here. I'm trying to cut myself some slack too and not worrying about crossing all the t's and dotting all the i's.

I took a few first day of school pictures, but alas, I don't have the chutzpah to find my camera amongst all the clutter on my kitchen counter and upload them. But hey, you can cut me some slack too!
